History of the Southeastern Region

Established in 1919, Eta Chapter at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro became the first chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. to be charted in what is now the Southeastern Region. In 1927 at Conclave St. Louis Phi Beta sigma adopted the regional concept and divided the “Sigma Kingdom” into four districts with a vice president in charge of each one. The Southern District was composed of the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

This regional concept was expanded in 1935 at Conclave Atlanta when Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia were moved into the newly formed Central Region. In 1954, the Central Region was dissolved at Conclave Norfolk and the Southeastern Region was constituted as it is today with North Carolina, South Carolina and all of Tennessee east of the 86th Longitude. Today, the Southeastern Region has grown into the third largest region in the Fraternity with 42 Alumni and 49 Collegiate Chapters.
