Body and Soul is a wellness an healthy life style program funded by the Center for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, 1890’s Historically Black Land Grant Universities and the American Cancer Society. Body & Soul is a wellness program designed especially for the African American churches. The goal of the program is to encourage church members to eat more fruits and vegetables for better health. To implement Body & Soul in churches in your community please visit Fraternity’s Web site under Sigma Wellness.
We will also work with Grantmakers for Children, Youth and Families (GCYF) to help reduce childhood obesity. Phi Beta Sigma recognizes childhood obesity as an epidemic especially in our Black and Latino communities. The health and wellness of children and families is critical to developing capacities that allow them to function and build strong foundations for success, not only through healthy physical and emotional development, but school readiness, academic achievement, workforce preparedness, financial security, and a myriad of other benchmarks of a healthy community. In this context, Phi Beta Sigma will participate in the discussion of this issue. GCYF’s Annual Conference will provide a forum for exploring the array of programs and policies necessary to strengthen prospects for children, youth, and families to achieve optimal physical, emotional, social, and economic health. Chapters are encouraged to secure local and state grants that are available in most communities with creative solutions to help address this growing epidemic.
