American Cancer Society and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity team up in battle against cancer

The American Cancer Society (ACS) and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. have announced the re-launch of their joint initiative to fight cancer. The two organizations have been around for more than 90 years focusing on the goal of enhancing the quality of life for everyday people.

Members of Phi Beta Sigma’s alumni and collegiate chapters worldwide are committed to raising money and promoting awareness to help prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from the disease. The fraternity also will educate through ACS’ signature activity, Relay for Life, and its new program, Body & Soul, along with prostate cancer awareness.

“For several years, our two organizations have shared a community service partnership, and today, Phi Beta Sigma solidifies that commitment by re-evaluating our past efforts and re-energizing our entire brotherhood for a greater impact,” said Paul L. Griffin, Jr., 32nd International President of Phi Beta Sigma.

Added Ree Stanley, ACS National Vice President for Human Resources: “We are excited that Phi Beta Sigma has chosen to work with ACS as volunteers addressing disparities. We need our volunteers to open doors in communities where there’s a need.”

ACS recently hosted and trained Phi Beta Sigma’s Social Action regional leadership retreat in Atlanta, Georgia. Griffin and John E. White, International Director of Social Action for Phi Beta Sigma, have spearhead the relaunch. One of the fraternity’s primary international program initiatives is “Project SWWAC: Sigmas Waging War Against Cancer.”

ACS is a community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through research, education, advocacy, and service. For 24-hour information call 1-800-ACS-2345 or log onto www.cancer.org.
